The Merits And Demerits Of Private Schools Uniforms

By Paulette Perkins

For decades the issue of a proper dress attire has been brought up. Most public learning institutions do not insist on a having a set dress code, but their private counterparts do. Looking at the issue more closely, one can see that there are some advantages and disadvantages of Private schools uniforms.

First, let us mention the advantages. Acquiring a strict dress code in a learning institution will improve student equality and self-esteem. Students will feel like they are part of a community, and this raises their self-esteem. When pupils experience equality, they are really less likely group themselves. As a result of this, formation of gangs in the institutions decrease.

Another advantage is increased discipline in the school. Most people who endorse the implementation of school attire will argue that they act as a reminder of the rules that have to be followed within the institution. Other reports have also shown that in institutions where students have a strict dress code, they do not wear gang colors, thus reducing gang related violence around he institutions.

Decreased peer pressure also occurs when strict dress codes are in places. What happens in these cases is that the gap between people of a higher financial standing and those of a lower one are decreased. In a school where strict dress codes are supported, students feel the urge to compete and show off with material possessions. Those who cannot afford to keep up get bullied.

On the demerits side, the price of the attire is the leading one. Quite a few people will argue the price is significantly less than purchasing most outfits, especially expensive designer outfits. Whilst this may be correct, we are not thinking about the cost of uniforms. We are thinking of them as an extra expense to the normal clothes that the students will still need to wear after school.

The individuality of students will also be limited when wearing private schools uniforms. We should remember that clothes do not just cover a person, they are a form of expression. Most institutions do not want to take away this form of expression as it also allows the student to develop other talents as compared to when they are being forced to wear a particular type of attire.
