Zombie T-Shirts and My Love Of "The Walking Dead"

By Clint Thatcher

With much anticipation, I have finally seen the culmination of awesome writing and fan outcry in the form of "The Walking Dead." I am such a huge fan of the genre that I have been collecting and wearing zombie t-shirts for years. All of my friends would look at me funny every time I started going crazy over "The Walking Dead" comic that is written by Robert Kirkman. They, of course, had no idea what I was talking about and they had no clue that comics could be for adults too. Now that "the Walking dead" is an acclaimed television show, everyone can join in on my fanatical dedication to this awesome story.

In 2003, Image comics took a risk and allowed Robert Kirkman to come on board and create a black-and-white comic book about zombie survival. Much to the failing publisher's delight, the comic was a huge success. It helped reestablish Image as one of the leading comic book creators and heralded a new age for them. The comic follows a group of survivors led by a police officer named Rick Grimes. He is a tragic hero, and the series has all of the heartache and loss of an Italian opera. I am a massive fan, and I have the zombie t-shirts to prove it.

The show has been stunningly well-acted, and I have become an instant fan of Andrew Lincoln's work now. I remember seeing him in other things, but I feel he hasn't been allowed to shine until now. There is a fine balance between the character of Rick Grimes between strength and vulnerability. I can see the pain on Lincoln's face as he channels the character's heartache. Sarah Wayne Callies also gives a good performance as Lori Grimes, Rick's wife. To be honest, there's not a bad acting job coming from the entire cast. I've got to find zombie t-shirts that feature individual cast members, because there are some that are so cool that I have to sport them on a shirt.

Robert Kirkman wrote an astounding storyline that has arced almost a hundred issues and has gone extremely deep into the survival efforts of Rick and his family. Of remarkable note is that the television show has deviated quite sharply from the story in the comic. Some people hate this, but not I. I love that I'm getting surprised again. That was part of the charm of the comic is that such terrible, shocking things were constantly happening. I get to go on a similar journey that I began a few years ago, but with new twists and turns! I have lots of comic-inspired zombie t-shirts, and now I'm going to have to buy show-inspired ones as well!

With the second season just starting with an absolutely amazing hour-and-a-half premier, I can only say that I am getting more and more excited. The story seems to be even richer this season now that we've started really caring for the characters. I'm not here to spoil anything, but you absolutely have to watch this show! It is turning out to be one of the best shows on television, and the epic scale of it cannot be matched in any other show. I was watching the new season starter with all of the excitement of a kid at Christmas and all the anxiety of that same kid in the dentist waiting room...and you can bet your socks that I was wearing my season one zombie t-shirts while I did it.
