Finding the Right Trusting Environment - Two Year Acting Program in NYC

By Maggie Flanigan

Also known as the conservatory method, the two year acting program in NYC is one of the most successful forms of acting school. This approach is designed for students who constantly wish to improve in their craft. The practice of a master taking an apprentice under his wing is a tradition long respected by many cultures. In NYC, student actors who are looking to improve themselves in their craft should certainly consider a two year program.

Actors who are true professionals know that the process of studying is never over. Years of training are the only way to become a "natural" actor. Great strength and dedication is required of actors who decide to focus years of their lives solely to improving in their art. However, when it comes to being an actor in New York, taking the time to study is what will make the difference between hobby and career.

The Meisner technique fits in quite nicely to two year acting programs. The method requires that students build their skills, starting with the most basic and ending with the most complex. Meisner training is very rigorous and can feel almost military in intensity. Students have to face the stripping and rebuilding of their identities and beliefs.

The military strives to give the soldier an identity that will survive difficult situations and be an asset to the armed forces. These two year programs in NYC are designed to teach actors to thoroughly understand themselves on a deeper level. Actors are then better able to control their own emotions and become one with their portrayed character.

Emotions and desires are an integral part of the human person. These qualities can be both an advantage as well as a disadvantage to actors. Acting requires that actors understand their personalities and be able to control them so as to better portray their intended character.

Bad habits can run amok amongst professional actors. These habits can partially be addressed in short-term classes. In contrast, two year programs give actors the time and opportunity to completely address these issues and form better habits. This whole process is certainly not an easy one as students are required to strip away their exterior and reveal their more vulnerable sides. Creating relatable characters for an audience is the goal of the two year acting program and, in order to do so, actors must be willing to strip away their tough exterior to reveal and analyze themselves as they truly are. Two year programs allow students to correct bad habits and build more effective ones so that they can work well with fellow actors and create believable characters.
