How to choose an unusual bed?

By Jacob Green

Have you been thinking that it is about time to look for a new bed? You have probably seen it all before so this is not striking you as the most interesting thing. However, if you have only been shopping at your local furniture store or in your family's attic, then you are in for a real treat. There are some incredibly unusual beds out there. Once you start taking a look at just how creative some of these furniture designers are, you will start to have some of your own ideas for your next bed.

Have you ever wanted or dreamt to have a floating bed? This is something that many people have seen in science fiction shows and films. While technology has not actually yet got to the point where the bed is able to float completely on its own, there are several versions of the floating bed that give the illusion that it is completely floating on its own. The use of a few strong cables and sometimes magnets are all that is needed. Examples of this are used in films, such as in Arthur (2011) and the inspiration of Kubrick's '2011: A Space Odyssey'(1986). This kind of bed is certainly a conversation starter.

What about one that hides in the wall? You might have seen these before - where the wall is the bottom side of the bed and it is pulled straight down. This was only the start and now there have been many improvements. With a push of a button, you can watch your bed slide out from the bottom portion of the wall, from behind an existing - non-moving bookshelf. Just imagine all of the possibilities for this. Some people are using this design for their own bedroom while others are putting it in a spare to serve as a guest room. This type of bed is a great space saver.

Suspension beds are something else you are going to want to consider. These beds are suspended from the ceiling using think rope or cable. There are so many variations of this type that you are really going to have to do your homework with it. And speaking of things hanging from the ceiling, this is a new twist to the hide-a-bed in the wall idea. This hanging bed helps keep the house clean!!

Instead of hiding a bed behind a wall, you can hide your bed in the ceiling and simply pull it straight down when you are ready to hit the hay. With this design, those living in cramped city apartments will be able to make use of more of their space - as for the wall bed, this is a great space saver. This isn't a bed suitable for everyone, but it is worth considering. You would have to make sure that your ceiling structure is strong enough for this. You wouldn't want it to come crashing down!

If you are still interested in checking out some more ideas, simply search for unusual beds online. Not only are you going to be able to find yourself a wide variety of pictures to inspire you, and find just what you need to design you own. Even if you have never thought about designing on your own before, it is surely something that is entertaining and fun.

Then again if you don't have your designer hat on, it is easy enough to just purchase these different types. This way, all you have to do is worry about figuring out which is the best for your needs and the space you have for it. Find the best price for it and then have it delivered and most of the time assembled if it comes in pieces.

The downside of having a 'cool' bed is most likely to be the price. This is rarely avoided, as most of these items are unusual and some even unique. However, you want to look at this as an investment. This is a purchase that you do not make twice! It is your place of peace, relaxation and rest. You want to make sure that you are providing yourself the best place for that.
