By Pierre Fontaine

Thanks to the excellent railway network in France, which is run by the state owned train company SNCF, train travel in France is an enjoyable, efficient and reasonably priced experience.

Societe Nationale de Chemins de Fer, or SNCF, is in charge of maintaining the train services in France and part of the reason why train travel in France is so good is because the company is heavily subsidized by the French government. It was largely through government funding that the high speed TGV train in France was launched.

The network of trains in France is extensive and reaches almost everywhere in the country. The only drawback is however that because the train network in France is designed around Paris, you often have to go through Paris even when travelling between two provincial towns.

Since Paris happens to be the centre of train travel in Paris, many railway lines start from Paris and often the people have to usually change trains in Paris when they are bound for other destinations.

Train network in France is mostly electric in nature and at least 80% of the trains in France run on electricity.

Details about train times and train tickets in France can be obtained from the ticket window, or guichet, of any staffed railway station in France.

If you decide to do a long train journey in one region of France ask for a guide regionale des transports which is issued by the local government. Or ask for a horaire, which is obtainable free at major train stations in France.

There are cloak rooms available in main train stations where you can leave your bicycle and suitcase for a day.

Many train stations also have consigne automatique, which are computerized lockers that equip you to store your luggage for up to 3 days. You simply pay the fee and you're provided a lock code.
