Vinyl, CD or Digital DJ Equipment

By Gerald E. Gutierrez

Buying DJ equipment is no longer simply a question of buying two turntables, a mixer, and headphones, and for someone just starting to learn, choosing which equipment to buy can be tricky. Advances in technology have produced equipment that uses different audio sources, and today's DJs can create mixes using vinyl, CD, MP3 and video.

The majority of DJs begin their careers by learning to mix on a couple of vinyl turntables. There is a choice between two types of turntable: direct drive or belt-driven. Direct drive is without a doubt the best choice, providing greater torque as well as durability. Belts tend to stretch with continued use, which can distort sound and make beat matching very difficult.

The CD players appeared in the nineties and were the beginning of a move away from vinyl. Pioneer's CDJ range is to the CD player what Technics is to turntables, and provides a multitude of features and functions in a tough, reliable and compact form. DJs can download new tracks and burn CDs in preparation for mixes, and CDs are less bulky and fragile than vinyl records.

DJ equipment is now well into another phase, with the focus firmly on portability and availability. Now, it is possible to create a mix without either CDs or vinyl records, using digital MP3s, which are easily stored and shared in their thousands on a laptop. The latest tracks can be bought and downloaded easily online, allowing apprentice DJs to quickly establish extensive music libraries.

A midi controller can be connected to the laptop for the creation of mixes. Some are designed with integrated mixers and can offer a range of effects. As DJ equipment goes, midi controllers are relatively inexpensive and easy to operate. Another option is to connect a time-coded system to the computer to combine the feel of vinyl with the advantages of the PC.

Before purchasing new DJ equipment, it is always advisable to research the gear you are considering buying. It is also a good idea to save up and invest in the best quality machines instead of going for a less costly version. Good quality equipment will be perform well for years to come, while being easy to sell on if you lose interest.
