Don't Play Cards That Aren't Playable
Now these are pretty straightforward strategies for Texas Hold Em, but it's surprising how many people don't utilize them. I'm sure I don't have to explain to you why you shouldn't be playing cards that simply aren't playable.
1 - Random low and medium cards aren't playable.
If you have two low cards are they aren't connected, fold them. It doesn't matter how close or far they are, if they are not connected, fold them.
Don't get tricked into thinking something like an 8-4 or 9-5 is going to make an inside straight. Nothing down in this range is really useful for anything. Stick to solid poker and fold these hole cards as soon as you get dealt them.
2 - Don't play a straight draw if and aim for the low end of the straight.
A straight draw is where you hold some cards and the board has some cards that could make a straight if you have another card. Generally you are hoping for this card to come on the turn, and maybe the river.
To not aim for the bottom end of a straight, for a straight of 5-6-7 you should have/be aiming for 8-9 and not have/be aiming for 3-4. This is an important strategy to grasp. If you aim for the low end of the straight you won't have as much success as you would like.
They didn't call it the ignorant end of the straight for nothing.
3 - Don't play three suited flops without having the nuts.
When the flop comes with three cards of the same suit you have to be careful. It's quite a rare occurrence but it does happen.
When this happens, players with two of the suit have a flush immediately. They are dangerous, but there is an even worse opponent just around the corner.
The chances of someone with just one card of that suit winning is also there, because the turn and river could drop a fourth of the suit. Now, these individuals are usually holding something like A-A, A-K, K-K, K-Q etc.
So if you don't have the nuts, literally A or K, fold.
These aren't the only strategies for Texas Hold Em you will need to completely explode yourself into poker success but they do clarify some major mistakes players make. Promise yourself that you aren't going to play any cards that aren't playable and you're game will improve.
