The Things That Makes A Great Gameserver Provider
Talk to any clan and they are always after the best possible game server provider. What is quality? Well a wide range of things like price, support, ping and network and server hardware.
Price tag
Price is only relative to what you get from a company. If you go budget then expect no frills and not a lot else. Don't get me wrong there are some excellent cheap hosts but also some I would not touch if you paid me! At the same time just because you pay more don't expect the service and quality to be higher most of the times. It will be - but do you need it to be?
Getting help
No one likes thing to break and I for one sure don't! So we like to know that someone is on hand for when it all goes pear shaped. Support should always be a swift and easy process when you want it. If your server ends up with a hardware issue then avoid companies who use middle men. Most companies rent their servers from another company, that has resold them from someone else, who has sold the rack space, who has then rented the racks from the datacentre. That was a simple example but the long string of companies can make things very complex. So you want to speak to the hosting company who will then deal with it as otherwise you can be waiting days. Business hours are not great for gaming. Gamers really want support during the afternoons and evenings and especially at weekends not 9 - 5 on weekdays. Otherwise you end up waiting until the next working day to get a response and you are left with a broken server for aid with your Counter Strike Source Server.
Server spec
A Pentium 4 with 1GB of RAM cracked the job easily 6 years ago but not now. If you are not on a dual core server with 4gb of RAM then be prepared for a potentially laggy ride! This doesn't necessarily mean companies are loading their Call of Duty 4 hosting relative to what they can take. However a budget provider will over sell, so at 2 in the afternoon things might be fine, but come peak gaming will be unplayable. So do your research and ask for a test server or test IP's, if you know the companies entire IP range then pop it in Game Monitor and hand pick servers yourself to try.
Network
Gamers always want no lag but this will be almost impossible to do but getting a low ping is best. A game hosting company will talk about what connection the server has to their own network like 100mbit but this is not important. The upstream connection from their core switch or router to the upstream providers network is most important. This is because the server might be able communicate with the other servers they host quickly but if they only have a 10mbit connection to the internet it may be a little slow.
Feedback
Read testimonials left for a company on their forums but also search the internet for them, as these can paint a different picture. Many companies are taking to leaving any poor feedback on their forums to say yes we are human and made mistakes etc.
