The Action and Drama Of The Sopranos

By Russell Strider

The Sopranos was a lengthy top rated HBO TV series. It ran on HBO starting from January 1999 until June 2007. The series was about the tale of a person known as Tony Soprano played by James Gandolfini. He was actually a mob boss as well as a family man. The actual story sometimes shifted between his personal life and his thrilling crime riddled business life.

Over the seven year series, Tony participates in a number of sessions with his psychiatrist. The therapist is named Jennifer Melfi, and she is performed by Lorraine Bracco. Lots of the subtextual tension in the series centers around Tony's double life as an ordinary good man and a murderous mobster.

The show's writers really want the viewers to contend with their fondness for Tony the apparently nice guy in one scene plus Tony the killer in other scenes. One of the key functions of the psychiatry visits is the fact that it provides Tony, himself, a space to grapple with those problems. Doctor Melfi is also obligated to deal with her ideas of good and evil while she counsels Mr. Soprano. In a few of the later installments of the show, they even have an affair.

In addition to Tony's doctor, other characters who play a visible role in his life are his immediate family members. The Sopranos are composed of his wife Carmela, who is played by Edie Falco, their daughter Meadow, and also his son Anthony Junior. Despite the fact that Tony tutors his nephew Christopher into becoming a fellow mobster, when his own children get older near the end of the series, he doesn't seem to really want the identical fate for them. Meadow is a great student, and her hardest decision is whether to engage in law or medicine. On the other hand, Anthony Junior, who is known as AJ, appears to accomplish absolutely nothing. He neither does really well at school nor work. While AJ engages in some insignificant criminal activity, his father never introduces him into the mob family. The series ends inconclusively regarding AJ's future.

Aside from Tony's blood family, the other most important aspect of his every day life is his mafia family. Throughout the series, Tony is forced to make quite a few stressful decisions concerning his mob family. He must operate it as a business and make cut throat financial decisions. In addition, he is forced to on occasion eliminate rather close friends when they end up being rats or spies for the FBI. The FBI is, by the way, constantly lurking in the background and trying to infiltrate the family.

If you're trying to find a series that features both action and drama, The Sopranos is a superb choice. Even today, several years after its initial air date, the series still holds a level of imagination as well as an entertainment value that is hard to match.
