Choosing a Disc Jockey for Your Wedding Reception
So, you are getting married and now it's time to begin the planning. The reception is part of that and you must decide if you want band, piped in music or maybe a DJ. If you go the DJ route there are some things to think about before settling on one person to DJ your wedding reception.
First of all, check the yellow pages; get recommendations from friends, relatives and co-workers. There are lots of DJ's out there and some are good and some are not. Listen to recommendations and then take your time. Make notes of questions you want to ask this DJ this way you won't forget anything when the actual interview takes place. Interview at least three DJ's before you make your decision. Check off the questions as you ask them and make notes on the answers you get. You will want to be assured that on your wedding day that this person will do as you asked them to do and not just run things the way they want to run them.
As far as the questions you should as, here are a few examples. First of all you should decide what music you want to play. Plan out what you take your first dance with your new husband to be, your father/daughter dance, the dance with your husband and his mom. All these things are very important and it should be done exactly as you want it to be.
The music when you and your new husband walk into your wedding reception is also very important. Then give them a play list of the music you want to play in general. Even if you decide on the genre of the music and don't decide on specific songs, this will give them something to go on.
You will want to script the announcements. Most of these guys do wedding receptions all the time, but they don't do your wedding reception, so write the script of how you want them to announce, say when certain people arrive at the reception. You might want them to announce your mom and dad and his mom and dad. Then how do you want the wedding party announced the bridesmaids with their groomsmen escort? Then the most important announcement, you and your new husband. They will have ideas on this so let them talk and if you don't like what they say, speak up.
There will also be times when just the music is playing and if no one is dancing, it should be up to the DJ to get some folks up on the dance floor. You might want to suggest that he play the ever popular Electric Slide or Heaven forbid, The Chicken Dance. The point is for people to have fun at your reception, so dancing is an integral part of that.
When the cake is cut and when the best man and maid of honor make their toasts, this is all part of what the DJ must do to move things along. They will only be hired for a certain block of time and you will want them to fit everything in.
Take your notes and make your decision. It's always nice to be prepared.
