There are three main distinctions to be made about any of these antennas. The most obvious is the distinction between indoor and outdoor antennas. The last main distinction is between directional and multi-directional antennas.

Indoor antennas are generally fairly small, and they usually are placed on top of or close to a television. The outdoor kind tends to be much larger and is mounted on or near the roof. VHF and UHF antennas are made for picking up different frequency ranges. UHF models can get channels 14-69, whereas VHF models get 2-13. UHF antennas do not need to be as large as VHF antennas, because they do not need to pick up waves that are as large in size. Which channels are desired determines which type of antenna is needed.

Directional, or uni-directional, antennas can pick up signals within a 20 degree range, but only in a single direction. The range may be a bit narrow, but the reach of this type is farther than with multi-directional models. A directional antenna is perfect if most of the transmitter's signals come from one direction. A rotor can also allow the antenna to rotate, so that it can receive signals from different directions, but at different times. The biggest advantage to the directional kind is that it makes for less interference, since it only receives signals from within a narrow range.

Multi-directional antennas are capable of getting signals from many directions at once. The reach tends to not be as good, however, since some distance is sacrificed for the increased range. These are also prone to distortion and interference from receiving signals from so many directions at a time. This is the best option, however, if the goal is to receive signals from all directions at once.
