A Guide On Properly Lighting Your Kitchen

By Ryan Marquis

The right lighting a kitchen can really make the room and set the tone. It doesn't need to be anything to complex, but it is a matter that should be layered. Many homeowners make the mistake of trying to light up the kitchen with just one fixture in the center of the kitchen ceiling. Unfortunately, this mistake can really overpower the rest of the room, including the company in the room!

There are different styles of lighting that can create the most effective lighting in your kitchen when combined together. The three most popular layers of lighting found in kitchens are task lighting, ambient lighting and decorative lighting. If combined properly, the result can be gorgeous!

If you enjoy cooking, task lighting is crucial. Not only does it help provide a nice feel in the room, but it's extremely helpful in preparing food and reading recipes. Installing the task lights in the proper position is imperative. If it's not positioned properly, it can cause shadows in your prep area and cause mistakes.

Task lighting is most commonly positioned under cabinets or even in a pantry. Puck lights are one of the most popular styles, in addition to strip lights or linear bulbs.

Most homeowners overlook ambient lighting in the kitchen. Ambient lighting adds a soft touch to the room in an indirect way. It adds a nice glow and is very inviting. If you have guests over, ambient lighting will actually attract them into the kitchen area or make it look extremely presentable.

Ambient lighting can come from a pendant light, track lighting system or just a mounted fixture on the ceiling.

There are many styles of decorative lighting that can be used in your kitchen. Unfortunately, decorative lighting can be the most expensive style, but can really add that extra touch to make it look beautiful. A common mistake homeowners make when choosing decorative lighting is they choose lighting that's too big for the size of the kitchen. Make sure the lighting fits the room or it can ruin the look.

At the completion of your lighting job in your kitchen, you'll notice a huge change. Lighting can really create a new feel and will add value to your own. Include dimmers on all your new lighting in order to really change the mood as you desire.
