Learn How to Pay Less on Having Fun

By Linda Selle

It's the first expenditure that is cut from every budget when trying to save money. Entertainment. It's a small pleasure, a light luxury, but makes life worth living. Thankfully it is absolutely possible to have frugal fun, and trimming entertainment expenses doesn't have to mean an automatic renunciation of a social life. There are so many fun free things to do and enjoy. If thinking about how to save money on entertainment, the tips below can help you secure a substantial savings yet still ensure you enjoy a good time.

Hit the local library for fun and free entertaining resources. The library isn't just filled with books; it's also full of dvds, magazines, and cds for you to borrow. Why buy when you can borrow (and renew!) for free?

Trade movies with friends. Organize movie nights at your house and trade flicks with pals. A social night and movie swap will save you having to rent or buy new films and is still a good (and free) way to spend a night with friends.

Buy movie or show tickets to preview shows, matinees, and dress rehearsals instead of opening night or weekends spectacles. If you can't resist seeing a live play, show or film, then purchase these cheaper option tickets and view the same performance for less.

Offer to host a dinner party at your place. A great way to try some eclectic and delicious homemade cuisine, having a dinner party at your house can be a fantastic social event that saves money on food and tips. As a bonus, share and learn recipes with invitees to improve your own cooking skills.

Get in tune with your artsy side. Explore craft making and look for free craft fairs in your town or community center. Taking up an artistic hobby can be very entertaining and become a rewarding pastime as well.

Play sports and enjoy the great outdoors. Parks, beaches and campgrounds are still admission free territory and guarantee hours of entertainment and are a great way to spend a relaxing weekend.

Check out free cultural events or special festivals in your town. In both summer and winter, municipalities often offer free shows or special events of some sort. Your next ticket to free concerts, fairs and workshops and exhibits could be free and just around the corner.

Play board games. Love playing games but reluctant to drop so much cash at arcades? Rediscover classic board games instead! Board games guarantee hours of fun and can be a great nightly entertainment option at someone's place after a hearty dinner or round of drinks.

Go for dinner, drinks or dessert but never all three at once. Most people will continue to dine out, even on a budget, so to save a few bucks off your bill, opt to eat at home and have a drink out, or treat yourself to a coffee and cake but not a drink. Dine in the afternoon and weekdays for a cheaper priced menu too.

Register for discount cards and loyalty programs. Lots of entertainment venues offer discount programs so you can redeem your points for a free admission. Pool halls, cinemas, amusement parks, theatres, tours and bowling alleys usually have some kind of discount and collector program available.

Opt in for email notifications about entertainment specials and source out coupons online. The internet is a great way to find online coupons for bowling alleys, bars, restaurants, pool halls, arcades, tours and films. Sign up for email notifications and have special discount nights and vouchers delivered straight to your inbox.
