Enough Horror Movies Online To Scare You Forever

By Adriana Noton

When it comes to independent films, the one genre that has led the way is horror. From the late fifties right up to today, many filmmakers have strayed away from the big studios and pushed the boundaries, and you can find many of these horror movies online nowadays. The internet has become the best source for scary titles, whether they be the big screen blockbusters or those more obscure titles you cannot even find in video stores.

Some of the first films ever made were horrors. Vampire films like the original Nosferatu are over a century old now, and this title and many other classics have become part of the public domain. There were many silent movie classic horrors, but when sound came to cinema, things changed, starting with the scream.

The genre continued to steadily grow until the Fifties when it suddenly exploded. Suddenly studios popped up all around the world dedicated specifically to making scary cinema. Legendary characters and creatures like the Wolfman, Frankenstein and Count Dracula were regular film subjects, and many of the classic horror movies online like these are easy to find.

There are literally thousands of B-movie titles to be found from the fifties and sixties. When the Drive-In craze hit America, some of the most popular films were horror and science fiction. Many of these B-movie classics have been archived on the internet.

Of course during this time, master director Alfred Hitchcock also worked in the genre, producing classic horrors like The Birds and the chilling Psycho. And while Hitchcock won awards, another horror guru, George Romero, was about to appear on the scene, with his low budget Night Of The Living Dead.

From huge studio productions to fan-made films, there are hundreds of zombie Romero-influenced horror movies online. This specific genre has garnered incredible fans who have paid tribute by making their own mini productions. This has even seen some of these fans go into the industry and many special effects artists and directors began their careers like this.

In the Seventies scary movies began to dominate all the markets, whether they were award-winning studio films like Jaws and The Exorcist, or independent gore films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

This period also led to a number of very successful franchises, including Friday the Thirteenth, Halloween and the Nightmare on Elm Street. This became the normal trend with successful horrors, while more recently these titles have also been re-made for a new audience.

The past two decades has seen horror continue to grow, and find new influences from around the world, especially from Asia, and many Hollywood scary films are remakes of Japanese ones. On the net you can find the original ones too, and see the source of some of those scary moments.
