The Hazards Of Dishonorable Media

By Reggy G. Riddick

Ever go into a drugstore and see gossipy tabloids lining the shelves by the checkout counter? They are always present. Speculation is a common practice for the media; they don't seem to have a problem with it. These rumors often turn out to be falsehoods. Folks fail to understand, though, that the speculation can affect others' opinions on the celebrities. That's not really honorable.

What is it about sensationalism that makes an individual pick up an entire magazine full of speculative articles about someone else? Why do people feel so good about reading it and later mention it to their friends? It's almost as if the underlying tone when discussing it over dinner is, "see, they're not that good after all." Perhaps this is the explanation for gossip selling so well. Maybe these magazines give folks a way to feel good about themselves; who can tell? To be honest, the celebrities themselves play some role in engendering gossip. While railing at each other in the process, some stars will do anything to get this kind of attention. They end up supporting the discussion by contributing to it, particularly if they speak ill of others.

Say a celeb is hurt by this media and wants to stand up to it. What happens then? That may end up being easier said than done. They face certain challenges, such as bringing more attention to the original issue. In the world these days, people will frequently slander or libel each other. Why does this occur, and can we do anything to end it?

Since the simple act of doing this can be so utterly damaging, we should enlighten people about the consequences. Many organizations exist that strive to cultivate compassion and dispense with these behaviors.

The World Ethical Foundations Consortium, Sara Bronfman's association, examines the root of any problem, including disrespectful media, and seeks to build compassion and create solutions. A little more compassion in our world could go a long way.
