A Quick Guide To The Pattern Transfer

By Arlene Case

Most of you out there may have an artistic side waiting to be unleashed and would like to find a way to show people what you can do. A craft book is a great way to improve your skills with all the innovative ideas and steps at your fingertips. Though it takes some patience when transferring patterns, learning how to do this craft work properly can be richly rewarding.

Things you require for pattern transfer

Aside from the piece of material you'll be using, you will also need transfer paper, transfer pencil, an iron and ironing board, among other essential craft equipment.

How to do a pattern transfer

When working on a hard and sturdy surface, start by tracing your design with your transfer pencil. You should try to keep the pressure of your stroke even all the way around the design to ensure a good transfer because if it is too light you won't be able to see the lines of the design when you begin the project. You are manually printing a design with your pencil, and it will be the exact reverse once the transfer is completed. For reversible designs you shouldn't have anything to worry about in terms of accuracy, but otherwise, you have to use your transfer pencil to trace the image onto the opposite side of your transfer paper, and iron the material with the side to be traced face down.

The next major step would be to lift the pattern from the material - the material can now be reused and is all ready for your transfer project.

When transferring the pattern to the material with use of your iron, use a small square of paper. For the iron, you will have to be sure that it is only set to medium heat, and that you move it firmly, yet evenly over the pattern, and as for the pattern, it would, just as usual, have to be face down on the material you are using for the project. To see whether the pattern has been imprinted well enough on the material, set your iron aside and hold all but one corner of the pattern firmly with one hand - with your other hand, lift the fourth corner and check if all looks okay. To get the best results, you'll have to keep on ironing and do so consistently to make sure the pattern is imprinted properly.
