Point and Shoot Digital Cameras Demystified - Panasonic Lumix DMCFH20K

By Fred D Knowlton

Do a search for digital cameras on the web and you'll find hundreds, if not thousands of different models and manufacturers. The prices can range from as high as 25,000 dollars or as low as 30, depending on where and who you buy from. The big issue is that most of us can't afford a 25,000 dollar camera and 30 dollar one isn't likely to provide very good images. As much as it sucks, finding the right type of camera will require you to do some research so that you are sure that the camera you are interested in will do everything that you need it to do.

The first thing you should know about digital cameras is that they come in three broad categories where there is a lot of carryover in both features and pricing from adjacent categories. These categories are often referred to as DLSR which is the most expensive and normally professional grade, bridge cameras which can be thought of as a wealthy man's toy camera, and pocket or point and shoot digital cameras which most of us have at least some experience with. The latter are the types of cameras you might see family members using at weddings and other types of functions.

You might be asking yourself, well why don't I simply go and buy a bridge camera. You can of course do spo, but you have to want to consider the question, do you really need to order an 800 dollar camera so that you can upload photos to my Facebook page? Point and shoot cameras are normally the ideal investment for a camera user because they do exactly what they need to do without requiring a great deal of technical knowledge to operate correctly. These cameras will do most of the work for you and most of the time will only require you to make small adjustments by way of a selector wheel. This is usually just used for modifying settings like whether the flash is on or off or taking a panoramic style photograph.

There are some other positive characteristics of point and shoot digital cameras which make them a superior choice for the newbie photographer. They are relatively economically priced when compared to the more expensive bridge, and DSLR devices. They are more durable and are less likely to break if they are banged around a little bit. There is also no guesswork involved in using the them as well. When taking photographs for the internet and generating web videos they are more than enough.

There are some disadvantages when doing a comparison of these types of cameras to their more advanced brethren though. One of the most obvious issues with a pocket camera is that they lack the ability to capture images of rapidly moving objects. Attempting to take a photo of a flying bird or running deer will definitely disappoint the photographer. If you are on a budget but still want to order a camera that can capture moving objects, you might be better suited by investing in a bridge camera. These can run anywhere from 400 to 1000 dollars.

Photography can be a great way to pass time and freeze memories forever. There are very few places that I won't take one of my cameras along with me. If you or someone know is becoming interested in taking pictures and you'd like to get one as a gift a very good one to start with is a pocket camera similar to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20K. Digital cameras like these are tough, portable, and will take good pictures for the amount of money you'll spend. The best thing about them is if you don't decide to pick up photography as a hobby, you won't have spent a week's paycheck in a device you might not use that often.
