Violin Restoration And The Unsung Heroes

By Marsha Silva

The violin has long been considered one of the most important instruments of classical music. People who play the instrument, music enthusiasts and collectors regard it as priceless. For instruments that have been handed down from the hands of the great masters and artisans to the present day, it is very important to keep them in top condition. It is important for it to not lose the beauty of the music that it produces. This is where violin restoration plays a big part.

Craftsmen are responsible in the preservation of this invaluable piece of art. They do not only make sure that it is kept in an excellent shape. They also make sure that not just the body is preserved. More importantly, it is the sound that the instrument produces that they have to maintain.

Wood sculpting is also employed for the restorers to do their job. They craft the body in such a way that they are able to create a shape that allows it to generate the highest quality sound possible. Immense discipline and passion are one of the keys to achieve this and also in making sure that the instrument's original shape is kept.

Ensuring good maintenance of the parts is also one important task. One must have a good listening ear for music to be able to do this well. Attention, memory and natural instinct to detect differences in the notes generated are always very helpful. Violin restoration involves constant attention to even the smallest of details.

People involved in restoring the instrument need to have a great sense of sound. Having a good ear for music helps accomplish this task. Natural instinct, memory, and attention to even the slightest difference in the notes produced by the instrument are valuable assets. Violin restoration is never an easy feat, after all.

In performing this well, constant research, learning and thirst for knowledge is required. It is also required that they learn about the arts and craftsmanship employed by the great masters upon creating the instruments.

Researching and learning constantly is also very imperative. Learning from the works of the great masters themselves are key to a good grasp in performing the task excellently. Artisans are also musicians. They have to play it to get to know what needs fixing and restoring.

Most people may not be able to find the value of the art of violin restoration. After all, not all of us have been immersed into the beauty of the world of the high arts. However, for these craftsmen who are the nameless heroes, they continue to master their arts into perfection. Hoping that someday, more people will get to appreciate and learn its true value.
