When To Engage Your Kids In Learning Guitar

By Jack Wogan

Talent for music is a plus in anyone's life and children should discover it when very young. Many of them choose the acoustic guitar, but the question is not that simple: thus one should be aware of what is the ideal age for children to learn how to play it. The guitar is big and a bit difficult to hold, it is not like the piano or violin, therefore you should take this into account before you engage your kid in lessons.

The first thing that you need to determine is if your child is big enough to be able to carry the guitar. Sizes of guitars differ depending on the age they are designed for: thus the smallest possible one is a size and it should be used by children between 4-6 years. Children aged between 5-8 years should use a size guitar and the full-size guitars can be used starting from the age of 7 or older. Before the kid starts to take lessons, you should make sure that he is able to hold the guitar in his hands.

Another important part of playing the guitar is if the kid's fingers have enough dexterity to handle the strings. Therefore the child should be able to carry the guitar, but also have strong fingers that should allow him to play the guitar effectively.

Buy guitars with nylon strings, because they are gentle with the sensitive fingers of the child. Metals strings are rigid and will transform the experience of the child in a painful one. Look for those instruments that give a unique musical experience: thus you can choose guitar effects pedals.

One more thing to take into account is the commitment and interest of the child for the guitars lessons. You should make sure that he has the initiative of learning to play a new instrument and you are not just a pushy parent. Listen to your child and propose new experiences to him only when you feel that he is ready. Don't make him start something he is not interested in.

The age recommended by specialists for starting guitar lessons is 7. Your child could also be somewhat younger and be successful with the guitar. You should however ensure that your child is able to carry the guitar and can cope with it. Special schools provide lessons to children who are 7 years of age or more.
