Basic Aspects In Taking Portrait Photos

By Anthony Walker

Portrait photography is more than just taking a person's picture. It is an art. It hopes to expose the character of the subject through his emotions in several situations. The photos on our passports, driver's permit and other official files may belong in this category, but there is a lot more to portrait photography than rush images. The most excellent portraits are those that reveal the subject's personality while evoking reactions from the viewers.

There are two components in taking a great portrait photograph, which are lights and the pose. Since the emphasis of every photo is on the subject, the backdrop is optional, with some photographers opt for a bare white background. The backdrop should help in bringing out the emotions of the person, not switch the attention of the picture.

The objective is to show the subject's emotion, personality, and even frame of mind. Some photo can do this by including only the face of the subject, while others reveal feelings better by including the entire body. And since our eyes, as the windows of one's soul, have the ability to beckon people without using words, a lot of these pictures feature the subject looking directly into the camera to engage spectators. There are also instances when the subject's pose and face expression already say so much that there is no need to look straight into the camera. Some of the most beguiling portrait shots were actually shot candidly while the model was doing a particular activity.

The placement of the subject and the angle of the camera give the picture another perspective. The photo should allow the spectators to take a look at and feel the subject's reactions. The pose of the subject can offer viewers a glimpse of his or her emotions, while the angle of the camera can provide them a chance to understand those emotions.

Lastly, lighting plays a crucial part in portrait photography, as true with any other photographic technique. It can help the photo achieve a more vivid look and give it more dimensions. Depending on how the photographer controls the light, a simple pose can show a lot of variations. But as much as it can enrich a photo, it can similarly damage it. Excess or lack of light or even just a small incorrect placement of it can already mess up the picture's look.
