Tips For New Bowlers

By Harvey Powers

Bowling is not only one of the most entertaining kids activities but also it guarantees loads of fun for the whole family. If you have just discovered your love for the game chances are that you are still struggling with your strikes. While most bowlers would like to get a strike or two in every game, for the better part, this remains wishful thinking on the part of newbie bowlers. So, if you want to play like the pros, here are some tips that will give you a surprising winning streak on those fun days out.

The things that you and your family will need to participate in this most enjoyable of activities.

While a beginner trying his/her hand at golf can make do with the bowling ball and shoes found at the alley, if you intend to indulge in the sport very often, it would be best to buy your own equipment. Since the bowling ball that you use, its weight and the positioning of the three holes for your fingers can have a huge impact on your performance; it would certainly help to invest in your own bowling ball.

The ball: Bowling balls are available in varied weights, so it is imperative to choose a ball that is not too heavy for you, as it can not only mar your performance but also put undue strain on your hand. A good thumb rule is to choose a ball that is 1/10th of your body weight. For instance, if you weigh 150 lbs stick to a ball that weighs no more than 15 lbs. Generally, women are found to be more comfortable with bowling balls that weigh around 10 lbs while men can work with 15 lb balls.

Although bowling is often slotted with other children's activities, the art of getting a strike is not mastered easily. Several factors come into play including your control of the ball. So, when buying a bowling ball, remember to get the three holes drilled to suit the span of your palm and the distance between your thumb, index finger and middle finger. This will help you to handle the ball better, offering improved control.

Bowling shoes: This is another crucial requirement of the game. While regular shoes cannot be used in a bowling alley, shoes meant for bowling cannot be taken out because of their smooth soles. However, when picking bowling shoes, you can base your decision on the very same factors that you consider when buying a pair of running shoes. Comfort should be on top of your list because you certainly will not be able to perform well with shoes that are too tight or too loose.

Keep your palms dry: Sweaty palms are often a problem that bowlers have to contend with. Unfortunately, trying to handle the heavy bowling ball with wet palms can be a recipe for disaster. So, save yourself the trouble and consider buying rosin powder. This will help to keep your hands dry and will enhance contact with the ball.

The techniques to get a strike

When spending fun days out with the family at a bowling alley, you will need to learn these three techniques to get those impressive strikes in.

The spinner: This technique entails shot delivery with a purpose where the part of the ball which touches the lane is controlled by the way in which the ball is thrown. Spinning the ball reduces the amount of friction and forces it to roll straight down the lane towards the pins.

The stroke: In the stroke, the player lays emphasis on the accuracy of the throw over the strength and force. It is a classic technique that is frequently used by pro bowlers because it provides controlled and smooth ball movement. Start this technique by keeping your shoulders square and hold the position all the way till you release the ball.

The cranker: To execute this technique, you will need all the power and strength that you can muster up. Well suited for players who stress on force over accuracy, the cranker calls for an extra hard throw. This technique is usually used in late timing because the player does not want to slide the ball.

It would be best to master all three techniques as they should be alternated for best results. Finally, remember that regardless of the technique used, you should always aim for the 1st and 3rd pocket to get an easy strike (space between the first and third pin).
