Freeview HD Recorders Information

By Max Jennings

With digital switchover looming, a sad side effect is that any current video player will not be equipped to record any digital channels. It will be able to record whatever you are presently watching but that mainly undermines the point of it all.

Therefore you will certainly want a digital TV recorder, or even better, a Freeview HD recorder. This gives an individual all the new channels, both normal and high definition when they become available and additionally enables anyone to record shows you are not viewing.

There are 2 types of recorder : one records onto a hard disk in the device, similar to a personal computer, and the other one records onto DVD's.

Hard Disk:

The overall length of programs you can retain on one of these is restricted by the specifications of the disk inside the machine. To work out how much time can be recorded, a simple rule of thumb is to divide the disk space in GB by 2 or divide by 6 for high-def recording.

For example, a 250GB machine would store 125 hours of normal television. For HDTV, you would likely expect a 250GB box to keep up to 45 hours because there is considerably more detail in the picture and sound.

If the hard drive fills up, you will need to delete some programs before you can record from now on.

DVD Recorders:

With one of these, you will be restricted to the modes of the machine. They have different qualities such as 1 hour, 2 hour for each disc. The less time per disk you record, the higher the picture and sound quality.

There are many different recording formats and whilst most will work on other players to the one you record on, you cannot guarantee that.

Hard Disk v DVD Recorder

The clear appeal of the disk recorder is that you don't have to continue purchasing disks to record on. If you tend to be the type of person that simply wants to catch up on programmes and not store them, then the hard disk design of machine is the one for you.

If you want to store programmes indefinitely or pass them on to other people, in that case the DVD style recorder is far better.

Conclusion

For the majority of people, a Freeview HD Recorder is the better option. It's future proof and offers all the great features such as series record that you would want from a modern set-top box.

Be aware that you also need an HD ready television to receive the extra picture quality. Nowadays, there are many bundles put together by the major retailers that give you both the box and the TV.
