How to make loops using Apple's Garageband

By David Capland

GarageBand will be a smashing tool for musicians, thanks to its potent loop tools. With careful use of these short audio segments it is possible to make entire albums from small constituents. Otherwise, it is also within the realms of posibility to use a couple solely to build up a recording. While GarageBand includes a big range of big selection of loops, most users are enthusiastic to make their own tracks to express their individual musicianship. In one or two straightforward steps, this guide will demonstrate the way to create Garageband loops from almost any music file on a PC.

Find The Audio Source

The first and most important step is to work out what audio clip to use for the loop. It's generally best to search for audio clips that feature single instruments playing straightforward passages for a minimum of a full bar. Although longer clips might seem better at first, they have an inclination to make the loop much tougher to manipulate. Once the sound file has been selected, open it up in GarageBand using the File menu.

Make A Selection

Once the song is selected, play it back and give careful attention to the graphical waveform display. This'll help to give a feel for how the song looks on the display. Next, click on the starting point of the loop to choose it and drag the mouse cursor to the ending point. After this is done, it's possible to manipulate the edges of the selection to finely tune the start and end times.

Clean it Up

At about that point, the loop is beginning to fix up but is still a bit unpolished. The following step is to spotlight the selection again, and then select edit from the menu at the start of the screen. At this time, whenever the loop repeats there is a rather unpleasing and very conspicuous ticking sound. To get rid of this, use the magnifying glass icon to zoom in, then highlight a portion as close to the starting time of the clip as possible. Next, select effect and then fade-in, which should make the file starts muted. Repeat this step again, selecting a portion as near to the end of the file as practicable this time. Eventually, select file and then save as to finalize the loop.
