WoW Warlock Guide - The Basics

By Tyler Allison

My WoW warlock guide should get you headed in the right direction when you're getting started playing with a warlock. Warlocks are masters of the black arts with the ability to control demons, shadows, and fire. The spells commanded by the warlock class are all focused on inflicting excruciating pain and anguish. They are able to fling powerful spells from a distance, but they're not equipped for fighting up close because they lack any real physical defensive protection.

A lot of talents depend on the use of soul shards, which the warlock has to acquire from slaying enemies. The warlock is easily one of the fastest characters to level and truly shines when soloing. When raiding, warlocks often do huge quantities of damage and should take care not to pull aggro away from the main tank.

This class is a choice that is available only to the Gnome, Orc, Blood Elf, Undead, and Human races. Warlocks may only wear cloth armor, like many of the other spell flinging classes. As for weapons, warlocks restricted to wands, staves, swords and daggers.

Warlocks are best known for their ability to summon and control a variety of demonic minions including Doomguards, Felguards, Felhunters, Imps, Infernals, Succubi, and Voidwalkers. All of the various minions are valuable, but you will have to weigh the advantages of each of them based on the job at hand.

Warlocks possess a wide variety of spells at their disposal including damage over time spells, direct damage spells, and some useful utility spells. They can make use of soul shards to produce a variety of items and to resurrect other players. They also have some limited self healing power via drain life, and great crowd control abilities as well. Warlocks are able to get their Felsteed and Dreadsteed mounts at a much lower price than the other classes because they are summoned via spells, not purchased directly.

The Affliction talent tree uses talents that are designed to bolster the warlock's curses, drains and damage over time spells. This talent tree works great for farming, boss killing, and raiding. Affliction is the best specialization for speed leveling.

The Demonology talent tree is geared toward making more powerful demon minions and enhancing your summoning and conjuration spells. The Demonology specialization is really useful for PvP and overall survivability. It is also good for leveling, though it isn't nearly as good as the Affliction tree. You will be very reliant on your minions when using this spec.

Destruction talents focus on enhancing your shadow and fire spells and making the warlock a powerful direct damage dealer. For Destruction, it's all about the high damage per second (DPS) and big critical hits. This talent tree is difficult to use effectively at low level so it is more often played once players hit higher levels. Although you can do really good damage, there are a handful of negatives to this spec that should be taken into account. You'll require a whole lot of soul shards, you'll burn through mana really fast, and playing solo is often incredibly hard. Though on the other hand, it is really fun.
