How Non-Filtered Water Affects Home Piping

By Hermione Edwards

Much has been written about the potential dangers and health problems associated with drinking straight from the tap. Most people are aware that it can contain organisms and chemicals of various kinds that might cause illness and disrupt bodily processes. However, the effects of non filtered water on home piping can be just as bad, if not worse, for the health of your plumbing and household appliances and fixtures.

Water coming directly from the tap without being treated or filtered is usually hard water. In many places around the world, water hardness can be as high as eighty percent. This means that there is high presence of magnesium and calcium in this water. These chemicals tend to damage the pipes and may cause many other problems.

Depositing of mineral deposits is similar to the problem of plaque that gets deposited in the blood vessels in the body. Plaque is the result of high levels of concentration of bad cholesterol. It gets accumulated on the walls of veins and arteries. If left untreated, the problem can aggravate and can even become fatal.

For further illustration of water hardness and its effects, we can look at the functions of small appliances that depend on water for their functioning. For example, a steam iron or coffee maker works better when filled with distilled or purified water. The reason for this is that there will be no residuals of minerals deposited on them to interfere with the operation of these appliances.

On a larger scale, fixtures such as water heaters, dishwashers and clothes washers can be affected by mineral deposits as well. One result is the possible impairment of the functioning of these machines. Additionally, the reduced flow from obstructed pipes that supply the appliances can lead to their poor performance, increased operation time needed, or actual breakdown.

Filtering devices are commonly used on counter tops or under the sink. However, these are able to provide filtration on a very small scale. These are great if you want to improve the quality of drinking water or use it for making beverages. But these will not solve the problem of mineral deposit accumulation in pipes.

A commercial water filter treats all water that is used in homes. It could provide benefits while drinking, cooking, bathing, dish washing and laundry. Large scale filtration helps to maintain the proper flow and keeps away all problems associated with lack of water treatment.

There are a lot of problems associated with having non-filtered water in homes. One, it reduces the quality of everyday chores and activities. Two, it might cause potential damage to the appliances. Three, there might be a need to replace the pipes. While replacement can be quite expensive, it also causes a disruptive lifestyle for the residents. On the other hand, it you install a high quality large scale water filtration system, there can be increased home value for your property as potential buyers view such an amenity as highly desirable.
