A Brief History Of Motocross

By Richard Powell

Motocross is a racing sport in which a group of motorcycles or similar all terrain vehicles compete against each other in an enclosed circuit. The circuits generally consist of off road terrain that include dirt, mud, water, and jumps. The sport was originally called scrambles and evolved from early motorcycle trials. The origins of motocross can be traced back to the early nineteen hundreds in Great Britain.

The activity emerged out of an English early trial which was meant to determine whether a certain rider could qualify for a race or not. The strict scoring of the trials, over time, were abandoned for the full races in which scoring was totally eliminated and riders that were faster won. The racing fans in the UK highly preferred the new competition and the fad spread eventually and slowly to Europe's main land. There it was referred to as motocross after the words for 'cross country' and 'motorcycle' in French.

During the thirties, the event became popular and people would even travel very long distances in order to watch them. Off road racing bikes, back then, were the exact same ones that were used for street biking but as the popularity of motocross grew, so did the desire to develop more rugged and better motorcycles. The earlier bikes featured rigid frames and thin wheels but they were replaced with rear suspensions and traction tires eventually.

Motocross sports were introduced to the public in America in 66 when a famous Sweden rider competed against the top riders in the United States during a large California exhibition. The same rider from Sweden raced the Americans again the very next year and absolutely dominated them. Eventually, this helped lead to revolutions regarding the ways that cycle events were done in the United States. The manufacturers there, just like the ones in Europe, began to make big changes to the way they built their bikes as well.

Companies in Japan, by the sixties, had developed bikes that were lighter, stronger, and faster. In 1970, they claimed their first ever world championship when a motorcycle built by Suzuki won the crown that year. In America, the increasing production of motorcycles and popularity of the sport led to intense competitions between the countries. Not wanting to be left behind, the Europeans upped their productions as well. This helped create the sport's explosive growth eventually.

During its long and rich past, the sport of moto cross has led to many numerous sub events like ones that take place in indoor arenas. There is even a freestyle sub event that involves the racers doing complicated tricks and acrobatics after a big jump. Fans of the older off road vehicle designs can view or compete in vintage events, where the motorcycles which are used are all from before the mid seventies.

Lastly, there is the extremely popular supermoto sub event that involves racers racing in a close circuit track that has both paved and off road terrain. Before racing, supermoto cycles are quickly fitted with unique ridged wheels that let them grip both kinds of road.

The activity consists of mostly two major races or events, the United States National Championship as well as the Grand Prix International Championship Events. The races take place in Europe and the US respectively.
