Winter Photography Tips

By Tiffany Nash

Oh, isn't winter beautiful - waking up to the early morning snow as you see your entire family crafting a snowman or probably trying out those brand new skis and taking them for a spin at the nearby hill? Taking these photos may sound easy at first, but it's actually a challenge if you come to think of it. But thanks to the dawn of digital photography and winter photography need not be exclusive to the professional anymore.

There are some things, though, that you need to consider. Winter shooting can be tricky as majority of the landscape is white and the background is bright. When shooting a snow filled area, the brightness of the snow may often cause your digital camera to somewhat underexpose the scene, thus making the snow to look gray.

This can easily be remedied by tweaking your camera's exposure level in such a way that the higher exposure leads to an accurate capture of the white snow. Snapping photos at the wrong time of the day may also lead to subpar results. Shoot in the midday or around that time if you want a cooler shot, while shoot in the late afternoon or early morning if you want a warmer picture, or pictures.

Although traditional photography belief tells us that using flash outdoor is not necessary but if you are shooting a winter photograph, using a flash can bring out details and highlights that might not be captured without it. However, if you are shooting close shots avoid using flash as much as possible as the reflection can greatly reduce any detail in your photo.

With the flexibility of processing available with digital cameras, you have better choices when in comes to choosing the finished format of your photograph. There is really nothing to lose to trying winter photography. The pictures you take may end up pleasing not just a few people. Familiarizing yourself with winter photography can be very rewarding, even if there are many more different techniques than what can be discussed in this article - who knows, you may enjoy this form of photography so much it may become your favorite activity of the season. Give it a try for yourself and if you take time to learn the tricks of the trade, you should be taking great winter photos in no time.
