Usually there are two to ten players, however, the most suitable number is nine. The game begins with distribution of one card to each player by dealer. The player who gets maximum number of cards gets the dealer button.
Then the dealer collects back the distributed single cards and shuffles up the 52 playing cards. Next, the player on the immediate left of the dealer posts a small blind and the person next to him posts the big blind.
During this process, each player is dealt two private cards face-down. These cards are called the hole cards. You cannot see others' cards but your own.
Once all the players get their hole cards, the betting takes place. The person sitting left to the big blind bets and the process continues in the clockwise manner around the table. This is called pre-flop betting.
As soon as the betting round is over, the dealer eliminates the top card. It's done to avoid cheating. Then the next three cards are turned face up on the table. These three cards are the community cards that can be used by any of the players to make the poker hand.
Immediately another betting round takes place. This, along with all the subsequent bets commence with the player exactly left to the dealer and goes forward in clockwise direction.
After the completion of this betting round, the dealer flips another community card (known as 'turn') on the table and third betting takes place. Here also the betting begins with the person left to the dealer.
The dealer then places the last community card onto the table. This card is called the 'river' or 'fifth street'. Subsequently fourth betting happens.
Then there is fifth and last round of betting beginning with the player on the left of the dealer. Next, there is showdown. Then the players who didn't fold expose their cards. Players may use a combination of their pocket cards and community cards to make the best poker hand which consists of five cards.
