Principles of Green Building Designs

By Theodosia Valiband

The need to consider the effects a new architectural project may have on the environment is now without question. Internationally, executives are creating legislation that now enshrines into law the concept of sustainable design. There aren't many essential elements that a designer wants to take into account before any design can be considered sustainable.

The key keyword for building green building is most likely : Recycle, recycle and recycle. Much has been written about the need to preserve and recycle energy and water, but what about the materials that are used within a buildings construction? Materials like discarded denim can be used to provide cavity insulation. Timber, stone and brick can all be reclaimed from demolition sites and recycled into a new build or renovation. Old buildings can be adapted for new use rather than be annihilated.

Correct location : it's exceedingly critical that any green build be properly sited. It construction shouldn't destroy, displace or meddle with any natural habitats, for instance wetlands, groundwater collating areas or old expansion forests. Much better to choose a site that can be reclaimed ; such as a brown field or former economic site.

What about conveniences that spur the occupants to live 'green' lives? Most of what the designer has saved during construction can be lost if the residents are not inspired to take on a green lifestyle . Recycling areas must be easily accessible and thoughtfully situated. A common example can be discovered in the conversion of old industrial grounds,eg warehouses, into convenient house residences.

Efficient Water use : To be considered green or supportable consideration should be given to how water is used within the project. To conserve water new builds should make full use of available technology to conserve water,eg low-flow toilets, sinks and showers. The collation and reapportionment of rainwater is a valuable means of preserving water. Rainwater can be used to flush toilets. It can also be used to irrigate gardens and other landscaping.
