The Best of the Caribbean: Grand Cayman

By Becky Padmore

Grand Cayman is a beautiful Caribbean island which is known as a tax havan and also for its tropical beauty. Its the largest of the three islands in the Cayman Islands, a rich territory of the United Kingdom George Town. Grand Cayman is a very popular hot spot and here is a guide to making the most out of your stay:

Places to Eat -The Caymanians are particularly proud of their cuisine, every second or third building is a restaurant or eatery and the food is incredible. You cannot leave the Carribean without sampling their world-famous seafood. Try the Cracked Conch for great views of the ocean.

Shopping- The main shopping town is Georgetown (the capital) here you will lots of shops including art and craft stores. The craft market is also worth a visit. Its open every day and here you can buy lots of typical Cayman gifts and trinkets.

Holiday makers love the Tortuga Rum Company which is a family-owned business selling the very finest Caribbean rum cakes and gourmet products. Here you can buy Caribbean sauces, flavored coffees, chocolate treats, gifts and collectibles, authentic and original Tortuga Rum Cakes. - and of course, Tortuga Rum. Also try the other shops as every here is duty free!

Places to See - The Pedro St.James Castle is one of the oldest buildings on the island and is well worth seeing especially if you're interested in history. Another popular attraction is the Turtle Farm which is a facility to raise the green sea turtle to release them back into the wild as their natural numbers are diminishing.

Also while here, make sure you take a trip to Hell! Hell is the name affectionately given to the area around the West side of the island where millions of years of erosion have left the landscape with a barren and blackened look. However, in true juxtaposition it's also one of the most beautiful sites you will see on Grand Cayman.

Grand Cayman has some of the best beaches in the world, easily the best one is the Seven Mile Beach where the stretch of Golden sand seems to go on forever.

Also another great activity is diving, snorkelling or any other water sports you can think of! Grand Cayman offers many of these, just head to Rum Point a lovely places with has many cute restaurants, bars and cafes serving great seafood.
