Deciding on a Turtle

By Peter Fred Smith

A lot of people think that turtles are fun to look at especially at a zoo or if they come across one randomly by a pond. But not everyone is convinced that they make good pets.

Turtles can make great pets depending on what you are looking for and should be considered when deciding on one. Obviously they are not as cuddly as a dog but they have their own advantages.

Many people who opt for a turtle are pleasantly surprised with their pick. While they are different than other house pets, they can be a ball of fun also.

Turtles come in many different varieties. When some buyers come in and expect to find just one turtle family they can be taken by surprise when they see the selection.

A slider turtle can make a really great pet and that's probably what makes it so popular. Often growing up to a foot in the length, they can survive well in a cage or the like.

Another choice is the box turtle which can hang around for a century or more. This is really one for those ready to commit because chances are that they will live longer than their owners.

Painted turtles generally don't make the best pets for a number of different reasons. They are easily recognized by what appears to be a stripe painted on them.

While a turtle can make an exciting pet, it should be known that they can really last for quite a long time so be ready for that type of lifespan. If you think you are up for that, then a turtle might be for you.

So make sure that you are in it for the long haul when you pick a turtle. Then choose one that you like and enjoy it.
