Gorilla Trekking through the Rainforest

By Josh Menson

Okay, it may not be as comfortable as mattress in the edison hotel new york but, a remote pocket of rain forest in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park within the southwest of Uganda houses half of our planet's population regarding endangered mountain gorillas. The Bwindi Park has become the most common area for gorilla safaris in Uganda and has now been proclaimed a World Heritage Site. This particular park consists of about two hundred square miles of heavy rainforest and thick jungle vegetation - a great habitat for the mountain gorillas.

The additional park that provides excellent options for Uganda gorilla safaris is the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This specific park is found on the extreme southwest corner of Uganda over the slopes of the Virunga Mountains which also border Rwanda as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Regardless of which park you go to, gorilla trekking throughout Uganda gives you a once a lifetime experience. The thrill involved with trekking through the thick plants while you track the Uganda gorillas is a not soon to be forgotten. In your forest trails; you may also encounter many of the different natural inhabitants in the region, which includes various bird species, chimpanzees, golden monkeys, bush buck, duiker and maybe even leopard.

The search throughout the dense jungle might take anything from 1 hour to 4 hours, based on the place that the Uganda gorillas choose to move to on that certain day. Whilst they do have everyday behaviors, they're constantly on the move searching for food, so do not really stay very long within a certain spot, unless of course it's to rest for the night.

Visits to the family groups of gorillas usually are limited to eight people for every group and the visit typically will last 1 hour. The journey can be quite challenging, but as soon as you come into close proximity with these gentle distant relatives of ours, the labours of the journey tend to be soon forgotten. Sitting in quiet observation of the Uganda gorillas while they go about their daily life, playing, eating and caring along with raising their young, this is definitely a truly magical experience.
