What is Direct HDTV: 720p vs. 1080i Format

By Dick Jolley

Before long, all channels will be fully high-def; it's vastly improved crystal clear and makes viewing so much more enjoyable. Because it offers more pixels, it means the picture is much clearer.

The highest resolution high definition television offers about double the pixels of a regular analog TV. Selecting one of the outstanding Direct TV packages available right now get you 130 high definition channels and more in the offing.

For digital television broadcast there are two different pixel ratios. A non-high definition standard definition fixed-pixel display would have 704 pixels across each of 480 scanning lines (704 x 480). This count is the total number of vertical lines stacked for the top to the bottom. In this instance there are 704 pixels for each scanning line.

With 1080i foreseen as the future broadcasting standard, you can expect the interlaced format alternative for HD taking hold. Naturally you'll need a plasma, LCD or DLP that has the capacity for showing those extra pixels.

There are 2 types of scan. Interlaced and progressive scan. High-definition video mode, known as 720p, the p would stand for progressive scan. 1080i is the shorthand name of a format for interlaced scan.

HD resolution is in either 1080i or 720p. It's either broadcast as 720 lines (1,280 x 720 pixels) progressively scanned with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio or it is broadcast as a "1080i" (1920 x 1080 picture) in a 16:9 widescreen image with 1920 pixels across.

Today's high-def broadcasts are done in either 1080i or 720p. Most 1080p HDTVs are capable of displaying every pixel of the highest-resolution HD broadcasts. With 720p you get much smoother motion and better for viewing sports.

With today's technology, you even get to record your favorite high definition programs and shows. There are tons of HD movies and programming available with DirecTV's wide spectrum of satellite broadcast technology. They offer a free HD DVR that lets you record 50 hours of HD or 200 hours of standard digital.
