Why A Degree Helps Obtain Art Careers

By Tom Addison

The truth of the matter is that people do not pick a path like creative writing for the money involved. They do it because something inside them thrives on the creative process. Even though there are not too many there is still a fairly decent amount of viable art careers.

One of the primary things for an artist to consider is whether or not to get a degree. Going to college can be extremely useful. It should be kept in mind, however, that a published author can often get hired into most teaching positions.

In the choice of going to school, the ideal degree to get is called a Masters in Fine Arts, or MFA for short. This usually takes two to three years of schooling.

Two different kinds of MFA programs are in existence. One is academic and the other is studio. Academic prepares their students to become professors. Studio, on the other hand, is where artists go to hone their art. Both of these programs requires a publishable book as a thesis.

There are teaching options outside the university. These could include working with people who do not have the opportunity to be in a college, like at risk youths. It will not earn a large income but can feel extremely fulfilling. On top of that, the writer can work on their own stuff on the side to make extra money.

The craft program of a college consists of mostly workshops. However, a person can find that they could still get hired in a teaching position. This kind of training though is really meant to perfect the art and prepare the student to make money from creating.

Perhaps the best advice for making art careers is to find other artists. Artist are required to network in order to make a living. Many of them start magazines or their own workshops. Other open or fund coffee shops or galleries where artistic voices can find a home.
